It’s an unfortunate fact that men often push aside those niggling health concerns – even more than women do!

As we age, we are naturally prone to more medical conditions and it makes good sense to reduce our risks and to be vigilant for new symptoms.

You may already see a GP in Bowral on the occasional basis, whether it’s a regular check for prostate cancer or ongoing mental health issues. But, now is the time to think more seriously about men’s health. That’s because November is Movember.

Shocking statistics show that men are dying on average 6 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. That’s why Movember exists; to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives.

This well-known initiative is most commonly known for men growing a moustache to raise money. But there’s a lot more to it than that. Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.

Here at Walker Street General Practice, we wholeheartedly support this wonderful initiative via our Men’s Health Clinic. We are offering comprehensive men’s health check ups to identify any potential health risks that may be present – and to address those risks appropriately.

Some health issues that may be identified include:

  • Prostate disease
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Diabetes risk
  • Alcohol-related diseases

After getting some basic measurements with our nurse, your doctor will also provide the opportunity to discuss issues not often brought up by men including erectile dysfunction and other sexual matters, work and family-related stress or lifestyle matters such as smoking, level of alcohol consumption, level of physical activities and family health history.

The check is tailored to you as, of course, everyone is different, however you may be referred for further checks, a blood and/or urine tests to check on your kidney function, liver function, cholesterol level, prostate specific antigen (PSA), complete blood count, iron and so on.

No matter your unique situation, the check will take only 30 minutes to conduct – what better way to spend half an hour than getting some peace-of-mind or some health advice from our talented team of expert doctors?

The best of Bowral doctors, Doctor Ono and Doctor Jeff Pinkstone, will be running the clinic. Both doctors have special interests in men’s health and will be more than happy to assist with your health concerns – without judgement. You can find out more about each of them including their background and experience in this field over at our website. Just follow the link: https://www.wsgp.com.au/our-doctors/.
